Cone Biopsy is a simple surgery done in order to remove abnormal cells in the cervix region for patient suffering from cervical cancer. Local Anesthesia is done for the purpose and you need to stay in hospital overnight. Under local anesthesia doctor takes out a cone of tissue from the cervix region for test. The cone of tissue may contain cancerous cells, for that it is taken to lab to examine under powerful microscope.
After the cone biopsy is over, some gauze is inserted into the vagina in case there is bleeding. Since the gauze is packed, you should also have tube attached to your bladder to help in urination. The tube is referred to as catheter. The catheter is the best technique to pass out urine from your body. The gauze pack is taken out before you are discharged from hospital. A patient may undergo bleeding for four months after the operation.
Sometimes bleeding can be reduced or stopped through the use of a drug called tranexamic acid and vasopressin. After the biopsy you could experience some pain typically same as that of period pain. If you experience intense pain, you can ask doctor or nurse to give painkillers to you. But no need to worry as the pain resides within few hours.
After this cervical cancer treatment you need complete rest for one week. It’s not necessary that always to lie on bed, but avoid strenuous activities or carrying heavy loads. Talk to a relative or friend who can help you out during this period. Don’t indulge in sexual activity particularly sexual intercourse for at least 4 to 6 six weeks after cervical cancer surgery. Let the cervix heal during this time.
Consult your doctor for guidance on how to care for yourself after cone biopsy. Doctors may prescribe some solution and increase self confidence if you are afraid that something might go wrong.
