Obesity leads to Cervical Cancer

According to report published by National Cancer Institute (NCI) obesity may enhance risk of developing cervical cancer in women. This form of cervical cancer developed is called cervical adenocarcinoma. There are some strains of HPV which are responsible for cervical cancer, and the research could throw light on the fact why some women with HPV have cervical cancer, while others don’t have. Obesity or overweight is a major factor that gives rise to cervical cancer and treatment is essential for it.

This report also gives rise to an increasing link between cancer and obesity. Much of the cancer deaths in US are happening due to overweight. Obesity is itself responsible for a common type of gynecological cancer or endometrial cancer. Cervical adenocarcinoma affects the cervical canal, near to endometrial tissue of uterus. The research also cleared up facts about the role of HPV in cervical cancer. HPV infections easily get removed from the body, but some particular strains can cause cancerous cells to develop in the cervix region. Investigators performed test on women to deduce information on the link between obesity and cervical cancer. In the test, 124 women were chosen with cervical adenocarcinoma and 139 women are chosen with cervical cancer, and another 307 without cancer. Body Mass Index (BMI) of all the women were calculated, which showed that women with BMI of 25 or above are at greater risk of developing cervical adenocarcinoma cancer than women having normal BMI. Weight was not a factor at all for those women suffering from normal cervical cancer. Still after this test researchers are bit confused as to why obesity is only linked with this kind of cervical cancer. They suggested that hormones may have some role to play in this cervical cancer. However, more research was required to clear the fact.
