A new health campaign called ‘Mission Possible’ is started in Vermont to provide free cervical cancer screening test and HPV vaccinations to boys and girls, for a period of six months. Given the rise of cervical cancer cases throughout the world, there is more need of such healthcare programmes that would benefit common people. These steps are vital to aware more people about the deadly disease.
The HPV vaccine has been very effective in preventing cervical cancer cases in 70 percent of the population. The Health Department buys these vaccines at $360 and then distributes it free to the providers.
Cervical cancer can be deadly, but if screening and treatment is done early, it can be fully cured. The HPV vaccine acts against specific strains of the HPV (Human papilloma virus) causing cervical cancer. Cervical cancer screening test encompasses detection of cancerous cells in the cervix. Common test are Pap smear test and the new cytology test. If tested positive, one must undergo immediate treatment to prevent further progression of the disease.
Through this immunization programme, health department provides vaccines in age group 9 to 26. The vaccine is given to girls aged 12 and above. It is recommended that women, who usually have high chance of suffering from cervical cancer, should undergo screening on regular basis.
There is a significant rise in cervical cancer cases in U.S with more women dying from it, than any other form of cancer.
